The western tradition of Art Music didn’t end with the close of the 19th century, as composers continued to expand, experiment, and develop the tradition into the 20th and 21st centuries. Professor Howard Sandroff traces this evolution through four influential composers. He begins with Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, a landmark of modern music, and continues with Edgard Varèse’s experimental work, Pierre Boulez’s innovations as both composer and Chicago Symphony conductor, and Paul Lansky’s pioneering use of computers in music. Together, these figures illuminate the expanding aesthetic of art music in the 20th and 21st centuries.
