« back to classes page
In the early 19th century, the federal government wanted all eastern Native American tribes to surrender their tribal lands. The Cherokee nation responded with great shrewdness. Using their political and cultural savvy to demand recognition and rights to their land, they sued the federal government and gained a trial before the Supreme Court. Historian Joyce Haworth explores the limits of Jacksonian democracy and describes the Trail of Tears, a sad, unfortunate tale in our country's history.
